Oleg Char is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between symbolic expressionism, abstraction, photography, neon, and sculpture. Across these mediums, he explores duality, impermanence, memory, transformation, and the relationship between the physical and unseen. Light frequently appears not simply as illumination, but as material, symbol, and a way of revealing what might otherwise remain hidden. Char’s paintings are driven by gesture, atmosphere, and emotional tension, moving between abstraction and recognizable form. Flowers, figures, marks, and fragmented surfaces become vehicles for examining presence, vulnerability, and change. In his photographic and neon works, urban imagery and sacred symbolism intersect, while his sculptural practice uses naturally weathered materials and illumination to explore rupture and transformation. Rather than resolving opposing forces, his work allows them to exist simultaneously: beauty and decay, chaos and stillness, permanence and disappearance. Underlying the practice is an interest in moments when familiar forms begin to shift meaning. A fading blossom, a fractured piece of wood, a glowing city sign, or a painted gesture can become a threshold between the material and psychological worlds. Through these encounters, Char creates works that invite contemplation without prescribing interpretation, allowing the viewer’s own memory, perception, and experience to complete the work.
